Reaching Out Like Jesus

Jesus gave up equality with God to come and live among humans. He left heavenly glory for the shame of a cross. He laid down His life to offer salvation to all mankind. Do you think Jesus can teach us some things about reaching out?

Here are a few things we see in His life:

  • Jesus spent His time looking for the people who needed help. He could have set up shop in the temple, waiting for people to come to Him. Instead, He was out among the crowds.
  • Jesus valued the lost more than His reputation. He was called a friend of sinners, a glutton, and a drunkard, just because He was willing to talk with the people who needed God the most. He knew that a doctor spends time with the sick, not just the healthy.
  • Jesus used good deeds to point to God. He went around doing good in order to help people see God’s glory. His miracles were used as signs, signs to show people the way to God.
  • Jesus knew that spiritual needs are more urgent than physical needs. When a paralytic was brought before Him, the first thing Jesus did was offer the man forgiveness of sin. When the crowds chased Him after the miraculous feeding of five thousand people, Jesus told them to seek instead the Bread of Life.
  • Jesus taught others the value of outreach. Jesus’ last words for His disciples were marching orders for evangelism (Matthew 28:19-20), commissioning them to go into all the world as His witnesses (Acts 1:8).

As Jesus said, “Go, and do likewise.”
